The UPS Foundation Partners with Africare in Chad
January 29, 2008 -
It is hard to imagine - 17,500 refugees, more than half of them children, living in small tented communities in the Sahara desert. Fleeing violence in war-torn Sudan, these refugees have sought shelter in refugee camps throughout the Central African country of Chad. One of those camps is Gaga Camp, located 60 km from eastern Chad's main city of Abeche. For many, Gaga camp has become a new home away from home over the past three years. The camp opened in 2005; more refugees arrive every day.
The UPS Foundation today announced a $100,000 grant to Africare to fund improvements at Gaga Camp.
"The UPS Foundation has given more than a grant," noted Africare President Julius E. Coles. "It has provided resources to ensure that the mothers, fathers and children forced out of Darfur and into Gaga Refugee Camp will have good nutrition, and the tools to sustain that nutrition for the time they remain at the camp. Sustainability is key to the projects we implement at Africare, and the UPS Foundation has become a vital partner in that work."

Toys for Tots Campaign Celebrates 60 Years of Caring
October 25, 2007 -
Sixty years ago, the wife of a Marine Corps Reserve officer handed her husband a hand-made doll and told him to give it to an organization that provided toys to poor children during the holidays. When he told her no such agency existed, she told him to start one. And so Toys for Tots was born.
Six decades later, that spirit of caring and giving is alive and well. To celebrate that spirit and the organization's 60th anniversary, Toys for Tots is joining forces with The UPS Store and Mail Boxes Etc. locations across the country for a "60 Days of Giving" campaign.
The campaign launches on Friday, Oct. 26, at the Marine Corps Marathon press conference in Washington, D.C. There, Mail Boxes Etc., Inc. President Stuart Mathis will present a $60,000 check to Lt. Gen. Matthew T. Cooper, USMC (Ret), Marine Toys for Tots Foundation president and CEO.
Then, from Friday, Oct. 26, through Monday, Dec. 24, participating locations will be selling $1 commemorative donation cards. All proceeds will be used to support Toys for Tots programs in the communities where the funds are raised.

UPS Expands "Green Fleet"
May 23, 2007 -
UPS announced its fleet of alternative-fuel vehicles - already the industry's largest - had expanded with the deployment of 50 next-generation hybrid electric delivery trucks.
The 50 hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) will operate in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and Phoenix. These new trucks join roughly 20,000 low-emission and alternative-fuel vehicles already in use.
"We're excited to be among the first to deploy the latest in HEV technology because it promises a 45% increase in fuel economy in addition to a dramatic decrease in vehicle emissions," said Robert Hall, Director of UPS Ground Fleet Engineering.
The 50 new HEV package cars are expected to reduce fuel consumption by roughly 44,000 gallons over the course of a year compared to an equivalent number of traditional diesel trucks. The hybrids also should reduce by 457 metric tons the amount of CO2 gases released annually into the atmosphere.
The new hybrid power system allows UPS to use a smaller diesel engine than would be required in a conventional delivery truck, thus saving on fuel and pollution-causing emissions. A battery pack, motor/generator and power control system are added, which allows electric power to be fed into the powertrain when conditions demand it, providing further savings.
The hybrid electric vehicles also use what is known as regenerative braking, meaning the energy generated when stopping the moving vehicle is captured and returned to the battery system as electrical energy. The efficient, computer-controlled combination of clean diesel power, electric power and regenerative braking allows dramatic improvements in fuel savings and emissions reductions.

2006 UPS Foundation Annual Report Now Available
April 09, 2007 -
As UPS celebrates its 100th anniversary, a century of service and excellence, it's appropriate to consider some of the fundamental ideas that were the foundation for its growth, innovation, and success. One of those ideas created UPS's corporate foundation in 1951.
It's a simple idea really. But because of its clarity, its simplicity, and its integrity,
it has served as the guiding beacon of The UPS Foundation's work for more than
55 years. It transcends developments in technology, generational trends, and even organizational growth and prosperity.
The idea originated with company founder Jim Casey, who said, "It is hoped that
the foundation will accomplish good purposes, which will reflect to the benefit and goodwill of the company." As was Jim's way, it is a humble, understated expectation that's been deeply integrated into the core values of the organization.

UPS Receives Award From The Salvation Army for Community Service
April 13, 2007 -
The Salvation Army recognized UPS with the Doing the Most Good Community Service Award during their Third Annual Luncheon in Atlanta. The award is given to UPS for our community support through The Salvation Army Angel Tree Program, Hurricane Katrina aid, and the Think Volunteer program.
To support The Salvation Army Angel Tree Program, UPSers from the Georgia District volunteered to operate three package cars for five days during peak season. The volunteers picked up 38,730 gifts for 146 Atlanta corporations. These gifts were delivered to more than 27,000 families during the holiday season.
During Hurricane Katrina, UPSers created a computerized inventory system and warehouse logistics program to improve the flow of resources being sent to the impacted areas of the Gulf Coast via Atlanta, thus making the Georgia District the distribution hub for all gifts sent throughout the country. This program will now be standard procedure for The Salvation Army Disaster Services.
The Think Volunteer program is a volunteer management training program that works to increase community and mentoring services for single parents and children. UPS created a Trainers' Guidelines to assist trainers in implementing Think Volunteer modules in four Salvation Army territories. The Salvation Army will use the Trainers' Guidelines to partner with other organizations and help improve their community work.

The UPS Foundation Supports National Federation of the Blind
January 08, 2007 -
$130,000 Grant Will Support Blind Youth Across the Country
The National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute, a center of excellence run by the blind for the blind, announced today that The UPS Foundation will provide support for both the 2007 National Federation of the Blind (NFB) Youth Slam, a four-day academy for blind youth at Johns Hopkins University, and the NFB's Volunteer Infrastructure Program.
Planned for the summer of 2007, the historic Youth Slam will be the largest gathering of blind youth ever. This four-day academy will engage and inspire the next generation of blind youth to consider careers that were falsely believed to be impossible for blind people to enter. While staying at Johns Hopkins University, youth will be mentored by blind role models during fun, challenging, and inspiring activities meant to stretch the imagination, build confidence, and increase science literacy.
"With the support of generous partners like The UPS Foundation, the Youth Slam will be able to provide an opportunity for more blind youth than ever before to experience the study of science in new and exciting ways. The knowledge gained from such programs will benefit blind students nationwide, and will lead to the blind being more broadly represented in the scientific community of the future," said Dr. Marc Maurer, president of the National Federation of the Blind.
