UPS has been an active leader in recruiting and hiring welfare recipients for the past 25 years. Even before
President Clinton challenged the nation "to turn welfare checks into private sector
paychecks," we were already on the front lines, visiting government and social service
agencies, interviewing welfare recipients and placing them in jobs at UPS. As one of
the five founding companies in The Welfare to Work Partnership, formed in 1997, UPS has
become even more active in hiring welfare recipients and in encouraging other business
to get involved in the initiative. We even provided a loaned executive to The Partnership
to set up the organization's operations and recruit business members. To date, we've
hired more than 52,000 former welfare recipients in locations across the United States.
Many welfare recipients want to work, but have no access to reliable transportation. Studies
have shown that only six percent of welfare recipients have reliable cars and many find
jobs in the suburbs where public transportation is not always convenient. UPS partners
with local non profit organizations and government agencies to provide access to transportation
for employees.
